I have just finished reading "Falling in Love with Sophia" and I would respectfully like to give the author my feedback. As a literature major and educator, I have written many poems, essays, etc. throughout my life and I consider myself a writer at heart. As a fellow Greek, I can identify with many elements in this story but I also must be honest, only because it is in our nature to be that way. Before I go into specifics, I would just like to say that if this book was based on some of his own real life experiences, then the author's wife must be a very special and lucky woman.As I was reading this book, I was a little confused as to where it was going and its relation to the title, so I had to keep reading to the end to find out. This book has wonderful elements to it, and I got emotional quite a few times while reading it, but I think that if this were to be made into a movie, then the title should be different, and the main focus should be on the relationship between the father and the son. I say this only because it started off somewhere, but I think it ended up somewhere else. While I believe that the author really intended to write about love and destiny (and it certainly is one aspect to the story), I really think that he is writing more about family values, disillusionment, life lessons, perseverance and wonderful parallel stories about fathers and sons.
I think there is a really compelling story with the expectation that Greek couples never divorce and they would "rather be miserable for fifty years than divorce". I also believe that there is much to be explored and identified with a Greek father who is always working to achieve the immigrant/American dream of making it and sometimes leaving what is really important (wife and children) behind. The scenes in the courtroom are wonderful and I love the part when Michael says "Don't piss off a Greek"...it's one of those lines that could easily become a lasting quote. I love Yiayia's quotes and how she helps Sophia get acclimated with the Greek culture, especially when she says "Michael's soul is Greek." I also think that Michael's mother has an important voice (especially at the wedding). The back and forth between Michael's parents was absolutely convincing of a couple with deep marital issues.
If this were to be made into a movie, I think it would be great to have a little boy with flashbacks to church camp and the grown Michael in his journey to find what he wants most, culture, family and God. I don't think that there should be so much reference to the actual wedding of Michael and Sophia, only because it would be too reminiscent of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". I think it would be more universally appealing if the focus was on the two parallel stories of the fathers and sons and the relationship with Sophia should be there and definitely important, but in the end, I still think it should be named something that has a reference to both the Witherspoon case and family values/religion, like "The Parable Files" or something along those lines.
This is my own perspective and I give it only because I believe that this book has the elements to be made into a superb screenplay, May the author's dreams become reality.

Falling In Love With Sophia is a heartfelt work by Robert Krantz, which I believe is a work of fiction based on real life persons and experiences in the author's life. These real life experiences can transcend any of our lives in any corner of the world. Think about the roots of the name Sophia (Greek for Wisdom). Falling In Love With Sophia is like an awakening, a eureka, a self actualization of what life is really all about. Taking the risk of falling in love. Falling is scary. No one wants to get hurt. The author has skillfully taken the human emotions of fear (falling) and wisdom (sophia) and has woven a pleasant realistic emotional story of two people finding out about themselves and realizing that the risk of love is finally worth the reward. Love, being bestowed on those truly worthy of the riches of this blissful state of being. You could call this a feel good book and maybe even the seminal idea for a movie of like genre, but the formula is a winner that has been told and will continue to be told for generations to come. The protagonists go through the initial stages of the purity of love, then 'grow up' to go on with life, and finally end up seeing the same purity of love that eluded them in the first place; only years older, wiser (sophos / sophia), and finally worthy of living in the state of love. Bravo Mr. Krantz!
Apparently the author convinced his friends to write some glowing reviews of this book on and this woman was dumb enough to fall for it. This book is just awful. I had my suspicions when I opened it and saw it was in a 14 point font size, but I struggled through it anyway. The author CANNOT write. I'm sorry, but he really needs to consider another profession. You don't care about any of the characters because they are so poorly developed. There are even some typos throughout the book. He actually said (twice) that the only reason he wrote this was because he wanted to make a movie and couldn't get enough money so he wrote this hoping it will turn into a movie. Wow. That really makes me want to read something you clearly poured your heart and soul into, right? Please don't waste your time or money on this. You'll find better stories in a high school English class.
This is a well written warm easy read. Great for relaxing and before going to sleep. Genuine and sweet. I highly recommend.
I loved the book and laughed a lot while reading. I could hear my parents and grandparents saying and doing the same things. I highly recommend it. You don't have to be Greek to enjoy it and the author did a fabulous job of explaining the Greek terms. Yasou!!

great story and a feel good book!
Falling in Love with Sophia was very funny at parts -- the very stereotypical Greek actions brought out when a non-Greek is introduced to a family. Read much like My Big Fat Greek Wedding in this aspect. However, this book deals a lot more with faith and the main character's realization that things he learned at Greek Church Camp when he was younger would shape his path and relationships as an adult as he navigates getting married in the midst of family drama.
